Time to really get creative.

I started this blog and community because so many of my former colleagues from Y&R, Lowe (then Lintas) and Ogilvy are now Madison Avenue “alumni.” Just look on LinkedIn. How many “Independent Advertising and Marketing Professionals” does it take to screw in a light bulb?

(Answer: 10 – one to screw it in, and nine to ask “Does it have to be a light bulb?”)

For whatever reason, the business that used to be our whole life isn’t quite so central anymore. Some of us decided to take a detour from the rat race after a long and successful career to spend more time with kids or looking after parents, focus on our own health or, especially, pursue creative dreams. Even if your agency exit was not 100% voluntary, or even if it hasn’t happened yet (but you dream of your escape) you’re probably seeing that there is indeed Life After Mad Ave, and you’re getting excited about it.

But the question is, how to use the talents and intelligence that got us into the business, and the skills we learned–sometimes the hard way– while in the trenches? Face it, not everyone out there is as smart as we are. So what are you going to do about it? How does that translate into making money, making an impact, making waves — whatever it is you want to be making –now that the brand you’re focused on is YOU? We know our talents have value. So where’s the ATM?

I’ve talked to ex-agency folks who have finally written that novel, become fine artists, started a charter yacht business, created a product-design comany, a bike-tour company… as you might expect, the ideas are flying. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next move, you may well find it right here.

Want support, business consulting or help brainstorming your new venture from someone who’s been there? Sign up for a 30-minute intro coaching session for only $25. Book online, upper left of this page, or contact me using the “contact” tab at the top of this page. I love to work with others who have come out on the other side of agency life. And I can help you get clear on your dreams, eliminate your blocks and get you motivated and keep you moving toward what you really want now.

It’s time to get creative. Again.
